The Today Program - May 29 2004 "The Today Program" on BBC Radio 4 (29/5/04) highlighted the wide scale national problem of inappropriate suspension of doctors in our NHS. The case of Dr Raj Mattu, Consultant Cardiologist, in Coventry was identified to demonstrate how hospital managers are abusing their powers to use suspension to punish Senior Consultants who dare to speak out about weaknesses in NHS care and who identify dangers to patient safety. "The Today Program" looked at the impact of new Government guidance on suspensions, and whether they are helping to remedy and resolve existing suspensions. Managers at the University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust have come under particular criticism for their failure to resolve the suspension of Dr Raj Mattu, which has entered its third year.
