Suspended surgeon takes to the stage - Aug 21 2003

SUSPENDED heart surgeon Dr Raj Mattu will swop his stethoscope for a microphone next month when he sings at the city’s Jailhouse venue.

Dr Mattu will sing at the Much Park Street pub on Friday, September 5 at a gig which also includes former Selecter singer Pauline Black on the bill.

Dr Mattu, who was suspended from Walsgrave Hospital in February 2002 over bullying allegations, was asked to perform at the gig by The Dr Raj Mattu Reinstatement Band, a group of city-based musicians.

“It has been a long time since I have sung live so I am really looking forward to it,” Dr Mattu told The Observer.

“I used to sing when I was a student in London and this is great honour to be asked to perform again.”
Brian King, chairman of the Dr Raj Mattu Reinstatement Committee, said the gig was a chance to highlight the suspended surgeon’s plight.

“This will be a tremendous occasion,” he added.
“It will also be a chance to support Raj.”

Tickets for the gig cost £10 and are available from Brian King on 07836 622725 or Jim Brady at The Jailhouse on 7622 1274.
