MP in
Commons call over surgeon - Feb 26 2002
Coventry MP Geoffrey Robinson was due today to take
the case of a suspended consultant to the House of
Commons.
The Labour Coventry North-West MP has given his support
to Walsgrave Hospital consultant cardiologist Dr Raj
Mattu, saying his suspension is a waste of public
resources.
Dr Mattu was suspended from the University Hospitals
Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust last week over
allegations of harassment and intimidation.
An investigation into the allegations is taking place.
Mr Robinson was due today to request an adjournment
debate in the Commons to discuss the reasons behind the
suspension.
He said: "At a time when we are so short of surgeons
and consultants - and this is a top flight consultant,
one of the best in the country - it seems crazy we should
be dispensing with his services."
Dr Mattu has previously accused hospital management of
ignoring doctors' concerns about faulty equipment and
staff shortages.
Mr Robinson was one of six Labour MPs who called for the
resignation of trust chief executive David Loughton
following a damning report from the Commission for Health
Improvement last year.
He also backed a campaign to urge Mr Loughton to
reinstate surgeon Alban Barros D'Sa, suspended
allegations of "oppressing" another doctor.
The surgeon was reinstated in July last year after a 20-month
suspension. Back to
