Suspended heart specialist Dr Raj Mattu today received a welcome boost on the anniversary of his suspension.

He received £4,411 to help keep his self-referral clinic running in Foleshill for another few months.

The cash is the largest single donation to the clinic and was raised from a Bollywood-style bash last month at Mercia Park Leisure Centre, in Lockhurst Lane.

The dinner-dance, Dil Ke Dhadkan - which translated means heartbeat - was organised by professional entertainer Rajendra Kumar, who said it was a great success.

He said: "It was a good turnout, more than we expected, and everyone thoroughly enjoyed it.

"People were crying out for more, so hopefully we will do a few more charity shows."

Dr Mattu was suspended from Walsgrave Hospital in February last year for allegedly bullying a junior colleague, who now works in Cardiff.

He set up a weekly health and heart clinic at St Paul's Church community hall, in Foleshill Road, where he has seen more than 450 patients.

Dr Mattu is due to face a disciplinary hearing over the bullying allegations.

More than 23,000 people have signed a petition demanding his return to work.

Brian King, of the Dr Raj Mattu Reinstatement Committee, was delighted with the donation and was confident of winning the consultant's job back.

He said: "Morale is very high on the committee and we are more than confident that we will get his job back."
