Thieves returned my car! - Jan 25 2003

By Alan Harris, Evening Telegraph

Brian King turned up for work this morning to an amazing sight - his bashed up stolen car sitting outside his premises and the keys put through the door.

The cheeky thieves had returned it after an appeal in the Evening Telegraph yesterday.

He was furious after his beloved Vauxhall Frontera was driven through shutters and stolen from BDK Motor Supplies, in Bedworth Road, Longford.

So he put in an appeal in the paper and offered a reward for its return.

Mr King, aged 49, said: "I'm flabbergasted.

"I came to work today and it was parked nicely outside the unit, locked up with the keys pushed through the letterbox at the front of the unit.

"It's trashed but everything that was inside has been thrown back in it.

"It's very scary." The vehicle was stolen at 7pm on Saturday after thieves broke into the premises and drove it through shutter doors. Mr King, who is campaigning to get suspended heart specialist Raj Mattu reinstated, is unsure why someone would want to steal an old vehicle which has 96,500 miles on the clock.

But he believes thieves may have returned the vehicle after realising who he was following his appeal.

He said: "They've brought it back, but why did they want it so badly in the first place?

"It's possible that they saw my name in the Evening Telegraph and thought 'he's a good guy' and decided to take the car back."

Scenes of crime officers dusted the car for fingerprints this morning and are investigating the theft.
