Delay over Mattu inquiry - Jan 8 2003

Evening Telegraph

Discussions were still taking place to agree on the membership of a disciplinary panel to hear the case of Dr Raj Mattu, the suspended Coventry heart specialist.

The panel of three has to be made up of people acceptable to both Dr Mattu and University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust (UHCW), which suspended him amid allegations of bullying.

It should feature a representative from UHCW and two external NHS people.

There have been concerns from Dr Mattu's side that panel members suggested by the trust may not be entirely impartial as they have previously worked with UHCW management.

Dr Mattu has not been at work since February, when he was suspended for allegedly bullying a junior colleague, who now works in Cardiff.

A report on the allegations has been drawn up by UHCW's medical director, Dr Michael Harrison, and will be presented to the panel.

It will be up to them to come to a conclusion and decide if any further action is necessary. Dr Mattu, nor his representatives have been able to see the report.

Stephen Campion, a representative for Dr Mattu's union, the Hospital Consultants and Specialists Association, said: "We hope that this matter is resolved as soon as possible.
