| Brother's plea over
consultant - Oct 14 2002
The brother of suspended Walsgrave consultant Raj Mattu has called for someone to take charge and sort out the issue before it drags on in to next year. Sudesh Mattu said he was not surprised at the reaction of health secretary Alan Milburn when presented with a dossier of the Evening Telegraph's coverage of surgeons suspended from Walsgrave Hospital. Speaking to the Telegraph at the opening of the Leicester Warwick Medical School on Thursday, Mr Milburn said he was concerned that top surgeons were being suspended on full pay. But he said: "That is an internal matter for the hospital and the doctors concerned and all I can do is hope that it gets resolved soon." But Sudesh, who sits on the Reinstate Dr Raj Mattu committee, said he wants someone to take charge and get his brother back to work. Mr Mattu said: "I am not really surprised at Alan Milburn's reaction - that is the thing we have faced all along from any official source - people are saying it's an internal matter and they do not want to get involved." Mr Mattu was at the public meeting last week when more than 200 supporters of suspended Walsgrave Hospital heart specialist Mr Mattu demanded his immediate return to work. Cardiologist Dr Mattu faces allegations of bullying a junior colleague. He has been suspended for seven months. Walsgrave Hospital has seen three high-profile suspensions in the last two years. The first involved Alban Barros D'Sa, who was allowed back to work following two high court cases. Breast surgeon Briony Ackroyd faces an internal hearing dispute being backed by the General Medical Council. She is taking High Court action against Walsgrave Hospital. She has been off work for more than two years and is claiming breach of contract against the trust which runs the Coventry hospital. Dr Mattu's brother fears his brother's suspension could take as long to sort out. He argues that Dr Mattu should be allowed back to work because the surgeon his brother is accused of bullying has since left the hospital. |
