Health secretary Alan Milburn has agreed to look at a a dossier of the Evening Telegraph's coverage of surgeons suspended from Walsgrave Hospital.

Mr Milburn was at Warwick University opening the Leicester Warwick Medical School - set to become one of the largest of its kind in the UK.

Speaking to the Telegraph yesterday, Mr Milburn said he was concerned that top surgeons are being suspended on full pay.

But he said: "That is an internal matter for the hospital and the doctors concerned and all I can do is hope that it gets resolved soon."

Presented with copies of the Evening Telegraph, Mr Milburn said: "I will take note of these."

They included a front page comment piece calling on new bosses at Walsgrave to sort out the Raj Mattu case urgently.

Walsgrave Hospital has seen three high-profile suspensions in the last two years.

The first involved Alban Barros D'Sa, who was allowed back to work following two High Court cases.

Breast surgeon Briony Ackroyd faces an internal hearing despite being backed by the General Medical Council. She is taking High Court action against Walsgrave Hospital. She has been off work for more than two years and is claiming breach of contract against the trust which runs the Coventry hospital.

Cardiologist Dr Raj Mattu faces allegations of bullying a junior colleague. He has been suspended for seven months.
