PRESS RELEASE – 25th August 2009

On Saturday 22nd August 2009 approximately 500 friends and family gathered at the Royal Court Hotel in Coventry to celebrate the marriage of Coventry Heart Specialist, Dr Raj Mattu, and his fiancée, Sangeeta Harish (picture above).

In a joyful wedding Dr Mattu was finally able to say “I do” to his beautiful bride amidst cheers and loud applause. The day was truly multicultural, with the happy couple and guests being entertained by local 17 yr old twins, James and Megan Godden, Ensemble 1685 (a choir comprising singers associated with Coventry Cathedral), before being treated to a wonderful selection of Bollywood hits by the main act, local singers Jas and Nichelle, followed by a superb dance performed by Sangeeta’s sister and nephew.

Guests were moved when Dr Mattu serenaded his bride with a touching rendition of Bryan Adam’s “I’ll Always Be Right There”, just ahead of the happy couple having their first dance. Celebrations continued into the early hours, with music provided by Dance Right Now Entertainments Ltd.

Background

Dr Mattu and Miss Harish, who were engaged in 2003, were finally able to announce their marriage earlier this year, in March 2009, after the GMC completely exonerated Dr Mattu of around 200 complaints made against him by University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire (UHCW) NHS Trust, and those by Government Minister Bob Ainsworth MP. After examining thousands of pages of documentation, the GMC concluded its findings in March 2009 that, amongst ALL the many charges, there was absolutely no wrong-doing at all that could form any grounds whatsoever for any action against Dr Mattu.

The Dr Raj Mattu Reinstatement Committee (DRMRC) says “Dr Mattu bravely spoke out to protect the people of Coventry in 2001 and suffered reprisals a few months later through his suspension by UHCW Trust Managers on 21st February 2002. The DRMRC has always been concerned about the manner in which Trust Managers have treated Dr Mattu after he spoke out, and ever since his reinstatement to his post at UHCW in July 2007, after almost 6 years of suspension, we have kept a watch on the actions of the Trust towards Dr Mattu and his return to work. After publicly claiming to support Dr Mattu’s return to work, behind the scenes Trust Managers refused to withdraw their complaints to the GMC. This resulted in further disruption to the lives of Dr Mattu and his fiancée, causing uncertainty and preventing them from enjoying the everyday pleasures of life that people take for granted, such as making plans for their life together and getting married. We are extremely pleased that Dr Mattu and Miss Harish have finally been able to get married unhindered. We look forward to Dr Mattu’s return to clinical duties in Coventry, without undue interference from the Trust.”

Public Statement
Dr Raj Mattu - 30th July 2007

“After five and a half years of my life having been taken away from me, I struggle to express my relief and joy on being told that that my suspension by University Hospitals Coventry & Warwickshire (UHCW) NHS Trust is at last lifted with immediate effect. It is no coincidence that this just decision follows the appointment of a new senior management team. The new Trust Chairman Phil Townshend had pledged to resolve my case. Following constructive meetings with Mr Townshend, Mr Martin Lee the interim Chief Executive, and Mr Gary Ward the interim Medical Director, I am pleased that I am duly reinstated as Consultant Cardiologist at UHCW and that the undertaking given to resolve matters has begun. This has been a terrible ordeal for me, my fiancée, family and friends. I can only hope that we will now be able to get on with our lives with the dignity and freedoms that everyone else enjoys.”

Press Release
Sangeeta Harish (Fiancée to Raj Mattu) - 30th July 2007

“I am extremely happy that the new Hospital Trust Management has finally done the right and honourable thing by reinstating Dr Raj Mattu. With millions of pounds spent on his suspension, Raj managed to agree meetings with the new Trust Chairman Phillip Townshend and the Interim Trust Chief Executive, Mr Martin Lee, without the expensive lawyers being involved. I am pleased that Mr Townshend has committed to the assurances that he gave at the Trust Board meetings. I am looking forward to Raj returning to work. We have suffered for five and a half years and we are looking forward to having a normal life again at long last.”
